St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
St. John is the smallest of the 3 American Virgin Islands, located 50 miles east of Puerto Rico. It is 2 miles wide by 9 long, and 800' high. It is an island known for its beaches, which are among the most beautiful in the world. The residents call it "The American Paradise"
What is there to do on St. John? We have several suggestions:
|
1. Go to the beach.
This is Cinnamon Bay.
You can find a camp ground, cabins, visitor center, restaurant and restrooms here.
|
2. Rent a jeep and visit the sugar plantation ruins
The National Parks have restored this 250 year old sugar plantation. Interesting to note that chunks of coral were used as building blocks.
|
3. Go to the beach
Trunk Bay, the most beautiful beach on the island, has a life guard, showers, rest rooms, snack bar. You can rent snorkel equipment here. There is an underwater trail around Trunk Island.
|
4.Go shopping in Cruz Bay
Quaint town, chickens running loose in the road.
Expensive shops, expensive restaurants.
Bring money.
|
5. Go to the beach
Hawk's Nest
Free beach. No amenities. Great snorkeling. Busy on Sundays.
|
6. Hole up in a villa all week, calling "CQ contest"
These pages are about a group of stalwart hams who, on finding themselves in paradise, did just that.
