 We traveled to Iceland in 1987. We booked our stay through Gudmundur Jonasson and selected a bus/camping tour that covered over half of the island and got us into areas the ordinary tourist would find difficult to reach. The tour we selected was rigorous; the tents and sleeping bags were waterproof if not always comfortable, the food was excellent to (towards the end of the two weeks) skimpy. The weather, even in July, was cool to cold, the skies not always clear. No matter. The scenery was spectacular, the experience exhilarating, the company congenial. The group was transported in a Mercedes bus, which had a small room in the back for storing our tents, sleeping bags and luggage while we were on the road and served as a kitchen when we stopped. There was a crew of 3: Gummi, the bus driver, Sigrun, the guide, and Gulla, the cook. Also along was Gummi's nephew Guddie (they share the name Gudmunder) to keep the two young boys on the tour company. |
