The Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh invites anyone wishing to enjoy and learn more about the splendors of the evening sky to their star parties, held two nights a month, Jan - Oct. At a star party, AAAP members set up a wide variety of telescopes (basic and advanced models) and offer visitors stunning close-ups of celestial objects. Visitors may bring their own telescopes to take advantage of viewing conditions at the site. Others use the occasion to simply view the stars and planets with their own eyes.

The Star Parties are free, and begin just after sunset on the appointed date. If the sky is overcast or the forecast suggests rain, postpone your visit until the next event. Observing conditions at the Wagman Observatory can be confirmed on star party nights by calling (724) 224-2510.
The star parties are held at the Wagman Observatory in Deer Lakes Regional Park near Russellton, PA, in the NE corner of Allegheny County. A map and further information can be obtained at the AAAP web site.

Our group went on a warm, clear night in June. A couple of phone calls, the group assembled and caravaned our way into the far north hills. It wasn't easy and we strongly recommend you download the map.
We brought lawn chairs, commestables, and binoculars, and sat and watched as the sky darkened and the stars began to appear. Children ran in the darkening grass, adults clustered around the telescopes. Several talks were given behind the observatory, acquainting new comers with the night sky.
We had a wonderful evening, learning something new, making new friends. We saw Mercury, naked eye, a rarish event we were told. And a satellite, not so rare for those who look upward.
The schedule of upcoming star parties:
  • July 7, 8
  • August 11,12
  • August 19 (Moonrise Special)
  • September 9, 16
  • October 6, 7
